On April 28th, 2017, I “swiped right” on a cute guy I saw on Tinder. If you are unaware, Tinder is a phone app used for dating. Tinder can be a scary place, and I very rarely swiped for anyone. However, when I saw Bradley’s profile, I was intrigued and wanted to know more. From the first message he sent me, I was captivated. We chatted for a few days, and then he asked me out. His birthday (May 5th and also Cinco de Mayo) happened to be the same weekend, and I told him I’d take him out to celebrate the day after his birthday. However, the night before we were to meet up, an old friend happened to be in town, and she and I had one of those crazy, fun random Nashville nights celebrating Cinco De Mayo. Long story short, I bailed on taking Brad out for his birthday because I had slept the day away, and needed to spend the night studying. I was focused on myself and school, and was unworried about anything else. Thankfully he wasn’t too offended by my being flaky, even though he’ll never let me live it down.
Instead of meeting up right away, we spent a couple of weeks texting and facetiming, slowly getting to know each other. I was in the midst of preparing for my spring semester finals, and he was so understanding and sweet. After my last exam, we finally had our first date. We met at an upscale hookah bar, and naturally, I was about 15 minutes late. I walked in, and had to walk by a table of 10+ older Black women. I could tell they were waiting to see who this handsome young man had been waiting for. I saw them look at me, then look at him. As I laid my eyes on Brad, he flashed that smile, and I was done for. Fast-forward six months, the day before my 25th birthday, Brad asked me to be his girlfriend. Since then, we've experienced so much amazing life with one another. On August 11th, 2023, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. When we first started communicating via Tinder, I never would have imagined I’d be madly in love, and engaged to the man of my dreams. I can’t wait to be this man’s wife!
It’s 2017, I have been in Nashville two years. Life was finding its pace. My dreams and passions were becoming my reality. The experiences and travel were helping me frame my sense of self. However, I was still imbalanced. Still yearning for more fulfilment. At that time, the more experiences I gained, I realized that richness of life lies in sharing with others. Sharing life with someone who knows, understands, and loves you the best they can, is invaluable. So, I prayed and sought out to find someone to intimately share my life with. Mariah and I met online and agreed to a date. She was fifteen minutes late to the first date. And if you know me, I am not a fan of late; however, the moment she sat down all of that worry evaporated away. She was and is radiantly beautiful. Her conversation was and still is lively, stimulating, and joyfully funny. Instantly, I knew that she was the balance I yearned for. She is a light. What a better way to live and share a life than with a beautiful light. She was exactly what, I did not know, that I was looking for.
Since then, there has been a lot of life shared between the two of us. Jobs, pets, schools, a pandemic! And each day, even when a virus threatens our very existence, I am so grateful I get to share it with her. We have pushed and encouraged each other to grow in all areas in our lives. Some willingly, some unwillingly, yet all necessary. Through our growth, I am thankful that today, we live and continue to create a life that brings us both joy. I am also thankful to share this with you as well, especially if you have read this far. We have made amazing memories with family and friends all over the country; and you all are a part of Our Story as well. From Seattle to Jacksonville, from Milwaukee to Midland, from Memphis to Houston, it has been a joy to experience life with Mariah and all the amazingness that she brings with it. Thank you for celebrating our love.
